Aims

The aim of the French Bulldog Health Scheme is to provide education and support for Frenchie owners wishing to health test their dogs.

Introducing the Health Scheme

French Bulldogs are particularly vulnerable in this present day. Many additional health and welfare issues are being forced upon us by European law, the Veterinary profession and other outside bodies and we are becoming increasingly accountable to these laws, the Kennel Club and veterinary surgeons as breeders.

Importantly the prospective puppy buyers are much more health conscious nowadays so by testing your dogs you can be seen to have done everything possible to ensure you have healthy puppies ,bred from health tested parents. We do know that of course some health conditions will not be apparent and there is always the possibility that something can come through from the past but the aim is to encourage all owners to have their Frenchies tested, initially for basic fitness and later for inherited breed related diseases which continue to cause concern. With the knowledge gained from the test results, we hope breeders will be able to make better more informed choices when the time comes to choose which dogs should be bred from or paired together. There is no intention to make the testing compulsory at the present time, but ideally all stud dogs and brood bitches should be tested.

All French Bulldogs registered with the Kennel Club and over one year of age will be eligible to participate in the health scheme with no requirement to be members of either of the two breed clubs in the UK. The Scheme will be graded from Bronze to Elite based on documented evidence from independently designated vets , which will be verified, but not judged by the Club. Certificates of achievement will be issued for individual dogs on proof of testing and results will be published on the Club's website enabling prospective breeders to make a better choice of stud dog and to enable puppy buyers to select their pups from breeders who test their stock.

A

The scheme can be viewed here

Q

How do I qualify?

A

You must fill  all the criteria required for each award. Certified by designated vets.  All documents (Photostat of Kennel Club Registration will be sufficient) must be sent to a compiler and after verification , will be returned to you together with your award.

Q

How will I let people know of my achievement?

A

It is our intention to print all results on this website and in French Connection with the highest awards also printed in the dog press notes.

Q

How can I be sure of buying a healthy puppy?

A

Do not buy from the internet – a good breeder does not need  to advertise.  Nothing is certain, but we hope that eventually only dogs holding Gold or Elite health certificates will be bred from, thus reducing congenital faults.  A list of breeders who may have puppies for sale are available from the Club Secretary
